Unsure of your career choices? Think about your transferable skills

We are often asked is there life outside of law? The simple answer is I hope so!  Whether you are a lawyer, legal secretary or paralegal it can sometimes feel that you are banging your head against a brick wall and feel like a career change. There are a couple of things that can help if you are struggling to decide on which path to tread which could help make decisions easier:

Take a personality test – such as an MBTI test, as they normally give examples of the types of job someone with the same “personality” can do/are doing.

Have a look at LinkedIn.  Do a search for people who have similar keywords as you, as well as looking at their job title.  Do a search for the job function you perform but in their “past”.  You will see what they are doing now and see whether it matches some of your competencies/skills.  Connect with them and ask how they approached this “new” career path.

Make a wish list based on competencies that you would like to have in a job, not a specific role, but what you can “do” generally.  Get someone to have a look at those competencies and see what they think you should be doing.

Whatever you decide,  try not narrow down your applications, apply for all the career paths you have experience in and you wish to pursue, ensuring the relevant experience is on the relevant CV.

We obviously find jobs for paralegals, lawyers, legal secretaries but we do know there are lots of other career paths out there.
