Taiwan Joins the UK’s Youth Mobility Scheme

As of 1st January 2012 Taiwan nationals are able to enter the UK under the Tier Tier 5 (Youth Mobility Scheme) which was previously known as the working holiday maker category.

The UK government has allocated 1,000 places under the Tier 5 (Youth Mobility Scheme) this is in keeping with the number of places offered to UK nationals on mutual schemes.

Other nationals that are able to enter the UK under the Tier 5 (Youth Mobility Scheme) are:

·         Australia;

·         Canada;

·         Japan;

·         New Zealand; and

·         Monaco.

In order to apply under the Tier 5 (Youth Mobility Scheme) an individual must meet the following criteria:

1.     Must be from Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Monaco or Taiwan OR

2.     Be a British Overseas Citizen, British Overseas Territories Citizen or British National (Overseas); AND

3.     The individual must be 18 or over when their entry clearance becomes valid for use and the individual is under the age of 31 on the date of their application; AND

4.     Must have financial funds of £1600.00 on the date their application was submitted.

Furthermore if the individual is a Taiwan national they will also need to provide evidence of a valid certificate of sponsorship. This needs to be obtained prior to submitting the Tier 5 (Youth Mobility Scheme) application. To be eligible for a certificate of sponsorship, the individual must:

           Hold a valid national ID card; and

           Be between 18 and 30 years old; and

           If male, have completed their required period of military service.

To be considered for a certificate of sponsorship, the individual must first register online through the National Youth Commission website. Registration is usually open from 1 December every year for a short period of time.

Once the individual has been allocated a certificate of sponsorship, he/she should apply for a Tier 5 (Youth Mobility Scheme) visa within 3 months of the date when the certificate is allocated. After 3 months, an unused certificate of sponsorship will expire, and will be reallocated.
