Putting Your CV on a Job Board is Dangerous to your Career

We have long cautioned against job seekers posting their CVs onto job boards. The case of John Flexman, an HR Executive illustrates the case perfectly.  http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/social-media/8992541/Executive-forced-out-of-job-over-LinkedIn-CV.html. John is currently suing his former employers for constructive dismissal. They said he was guilty of inappropriate use of social media and that his CV breached the company’s confidentiality.  John posted his CV on LinkedIn and included information on how he had reduced the company’s rate of attrition. Whether or not John is in breach of his contract people need to be aware that posting their CV on a public forum can damage your career because your employer will probably see it. Although LinkedIn claim to be simply a professional networking site it is still a job board.

As recruiters we search for candidates on LinkedIn as do our clients. LinkedIn has a default setting which says people are interested in being contacted for career opportunities. If you want to let the world and your employer know that you are looking for a better offer then tick the box!

Worse still John could have posted his CV onto a job board such as Ladders. The only conceivable reason for posting your CV on one of those boards is to find another job. We pay to search those job boards and so do many employers. We often search to find out who is looking in a particular company and so may your employer.

If you want to take a discreet look into the market engage a professional recruiter, ask friends who they have received good service from or look for a recruiter who is a member of the Association of Professional Staffing Companies (www.apsco.org) or in the broader market the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (www.rec.uk.com). You could even approach companies directly on a speculative basis and hope it doesn’t get back but whatever you do don’t put your CV on a job board!!!
